Mukesh Ambani’s ambitious telecom service Reliance Jio has crossed 50 million subscriber base since its launch in early September, ramping up the number in 83 days.
Ambani had launched the 4G-only service on September 1. And it is one of the biggest USP offered by the new operator was lifetime free voice calling across the country. Also, under a ‘Welcome Offer‘, the company had said that all services, including data browsing, will be free on its network till December 31, 2016.
Airtel reached the same milestone of achieving fifty million subscribers in 12 years. However Idea and Vodafone took 13 years each. Reliance Jio Infocomm — the new entrant in the 4G market had launched its commercial services on September 5. Jio is competing with the likes of Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular. And as per the last update had recieved 16 million users in the first month of its operation.
Officials said, “We have crossed the 50-million mark in a record 83 days. The current rate of growth translates into acquiring around 6 lakh customers on a daily basis.” This also makes Jio the telco with the largest number of 4G subscribers, ahead of rivals.
Reliance Jio is the fastest growing Telecom in India
Reliance Jio has achieved this feat a lot faster than even the most popular social networking sites or apps in India. For instance, Facebook and WhatsApp took over 40 months to tap into 50 million subscribers. Although Instagram took 6 months to reach the mark. Even Twitter took about 9 months to hit 50 million subscription.
Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Jio has crossed the 50 million subscriber mark in less than three months after its full-fledged 4G services launch to emerge as the largest broadband operator in the country. According to sources, Jio — setting a new record — has acquired 1,000 customers per minute (since September 05) and 6 lakh per day.
With an investment of Rs. 1,50,000 crore, Reliance Industries Chairman, Mukesh Ambani termed Jio as the biggest startup in the world, in March 2016. Mukesh Ambani said, “It (Jio) is one of the largest transformational green-field digital initiatives anywhere in the world with an investment of over Rs 150,000 crore.”
While Reliance Jio is certainly on its way to “create a world record by acquiring 100 million customers in the shortest possible time”, it will have to make sure the services are up to the mark in order to retain the subscribers on the Jio network way after the free trial.
